We Had The Will, We Found The Way

by L. J. Furman

Between the hard rains of Katrina
And the blowhards sent from FEMA
The Ninth Ward was washed away.
The Ninth Ward was washed away.
'Heck of a job, Brownie' is what he said.
'Heck of a job, Brownie' got a roof and a bed.
The Ninth Ward was washed away.
The Ninth Ward was washed away.

Once we flew to the moon,
Once we called the tune,
We had the will, we found the way.
What's happening today?

If I signed up to serve my country,
Signed to fight, kill, die for my country,
I’d expect cover for my back.
Not like we get there in Iraq.
Chicken hawks with no knowledge no plan,
Chicken hawks with their heads in the sand.
‘You go to war with the army you have’
You die from that back-stab

Once we flew to the moon,
Once we called the tune,
We had the will, we found the way.
What's happening today?

Once we lit a shining beacon.
Like a city on a hill.
Gov’ment of, for, and by the people,
We found the way, we had the will.
We had nothing to fear but fear itself.
We were where everyone wanted to be.
We asked what we can do for our country,
not what the country can do for me.

Freedom to speak and assemble
Freedom to pray or to not
Freedom from fear, freedom from want
That was what we got

Once we flew to the moon,
Once we called the tune,
We had the will, we found the way.
What's happening today?
